ELIMU
Project ELIMU grew out of our Project RIZIKI in 2018.After completing elementary education, most students are faced woth the question of what to do next. There are no apprenticeships as we know them. With the new project we want to support young people to make an apprenticeship or complete high school. Wit a certificate or university degree they have a better chance of a later employment, which is very important especially for young women and their independence. Due to a generous donation (P. Vogel) we were able to offer the following school graduates an education:

Sida Juma Makame (completed)
Year of Birth: 1999
Apprenticeship as: Financial Administration
School: The State University of Zanzibar in Chwaka (Boarding school)
Costs of apprenticeship: approx. CHF 600 per year
Time of apprenticship: 2018- 2019
Until 2017 Sida was sponsored through our project Riziki. She attended the Ben Bella School for girls in Zanzibar City until that time. Her family then raised the tuition fee for the first semester at the State University of Zanzibar in Chwaka in the east of the island. The remaining school fee for the school year 2018 was taken over by Maisha Zanzibar, we also gave her a laptop for her studies.
Siti Kombo Mussa (completed)

Apprenticeship as: Chef
School: VETA school (The Vocational Educational and Training Authority) in Zanzibar City
Costs of apprenticeship: approx. CHF 750
Time of apprenticship: 2018
The VETA school in Zanzibar City provides a few trainings. Siti decided to learn the profession of a cook. This training lasts at least one year. In addition to the tuition fee, the apprentice has to pay all material costs for pans, pots, knives, apron, cooking hood, cooking utensils, uniform, teaching material etc. and the food itself. Maisha Zanzibar will pay for all expenses.
Siti is from Nungwi (North) and can stay with relatives in Zanzibar city during her education.
Warida Haji Faki (completed)

Apprenticeship as: Tailor
School: VETA School (The Vocational Educational and Training Authority) in Zanzibar City
Costs of apprenticeship: approx. CHF 750
Time of apprenticship: 2018

Warida decided to learn the profession of a tailor. This training lasts at least one year. In addition to the tuition fee, the apprentice has to pay all material costs such as needles, scissors, thread, measuring tape, fabric, uniform, teaching materials etc. Maisha Zanzibar will pay for all expenses.
Warida is from Nungwi (North) and can stay with relatives in Bububu (near Zanzibar City) during her education.
Ali Simai Haji (completed)
Year of Birth: 1996
Apprenticeship as: Bachelor of social work and social administration
School: Kampala Internatonal University, in Daressalaam
Costs of apprenticeship: approx. CHF 800 per year
Time of apprenticship: 2018 /2019
Ali has already studied at the University in daressalaam for two years, financed by himself. For the third and last year, which Maisha Zanzibar takes over, he and his family lacked the money. We pay all school fees and provided him with a laptop, Ali himself pays for the accommodation and living expenses. He is from Nungwi (northern Zanzibar) and lives with relatives in Daressalaam during his studies.
Hassan Halim Hafidhi (completed)
Year of Birth: 3.03.1999
Apprenticeship as: Intensive Hotel Services
School: State University Zanzibar
Costs of apprenticeship: approx. CHF 300
Time of apprenticship: 6 months
Hassan was sponsored until 2018 by our project Riziki. He has completed his fourth year of secondary school. The State University in Zanzibar City offers various education programs. Hassan has decided to enter the hotel industry and spend six months in intensive training in hotel management. Maisha Zanzibar pays for the tuition, uniform and teaching materials.
Hassan comes from Nungwi (North) and can live with relatives near Zanzibar City during his education.
Zakia Haji Juma (completed)

Apprenticeship as: Bachelor of Arts with Education
School: State University Zanzibar
Costs of apprenticeship: approx. CHF 750 per year
Time of apprenticship: 2019 - 2021
Zakia has completed the 5th and 6th year of secondary school and always wanted to become a teacher. However, her relatives were only able to pay the school fees for the first semester at SUZA. The training lasts a maximum of three years. After talking with her and her father, Maisha Zanzibar decided to pay the fees for the remaining maximum 5 semesters.
Zakia comes from the north of Zanzibar (Nungwi) and lives with relatives near the capital Zanzibar City during her education.

Moza Abraham Juma (completed)

Apprenticeship as: Library and Information Management
School: The Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial Academy, Karume Campus Zanzibar

Time of apprenticship: 2020 - 2023
The relatively new academy near Zanzibar City offers various programs and trainings in the fields of education, business administration, economics, information technology, human resources management and social sciences. Moza starts her education with the one-year Certificate in Library and Information Management and if she passes, she would like to continue with the Diploma.
During her studies she lives at home, close to the campus.
Fathiya Halim Hafidhi

Apprenticeship as: Teacher
School: Tunguu Zanzibar University

Time of apprenticship: 2022-2024
Fathiya is Hassan's sister and was sponsored through our RIZIKI project from 2010 to 2021. She has completed the fourth year of secondary school and wanted to become a teacher since she was a little girl. We will gladly fulfil this lifelong dream for her.
Fathiya is studying at Tunguu Zanzibar University near Zanzibar City since March 2022, she can stay with relatives during her education. Maisha Zanzibar pays the full cost of her education.
Zawadi Ramadani Abdallah (completed)

Time of apprenticship: 2022-2023
Zawadi was one of the first children sponsored by Maisha Zanzibar in 2010. She attended secondary school in Nungwi until 2022 and, due to good school grades, now has the opportunity to complete further education at the relatively new academy in Zanzibar.
Maisha Zanzibar covers the full cost of education, and Zawadi lives with relatives near the campus during the training period.

Alima started kindergarten in 2011 through our project RIZIKI. She completed secondary school in 2023 and now wants to become a chef. Unfortunately, her family was only able to raise around CHF 100 for her education; Maisha Zanzibar is covering the rest of the CHF 250 required.
