Staff House in Upenja, 2012 - 2013

Upenja is a village 35 km south of the northern tip of Zanzibar and has about 10'000 inhabitants.Tourism does not exist here. With amazing self initiative the village has built a primary school (level 1 - 10) which is attended by 400 students. The government surpisingly financed one building for the secondary school in th eyear 2012 (level 11-14). Well trained  teachers are rare to find in the country side, but with a staff house Upenja has the chance to get better educated teachers from town.

With the financial help of Usitawi Network, Club Zurich, The foundation Kinderhilfe des Swissair Personals and ABANTU foundation, Maisha Zanzibar is now building a staff house for 8 teachers. The ground breaking took place on 22nd of April, 2012 and in February 2013, the building has been completed.

Due to the very positive experience with the village committee, the school teachers and the incredible commitment of the villagers, we want to support Upenja in the future with more necessary buildings such as a library, a chemistry laboratory and a general meeting room for teachers and students.
